Word doc to PDF — free conversion, no signup
Microsoft Word has a built-in 'Save As PDF' that works fine for most documents. But it needs Word. If you're on a Chromebook, a phone, a work computer where you can't install Word, or a Linux box without Office — the online tools are your path.
PennyPDF uses LibreOffice Writer headless to convert. Font handling is the main thing that goes wrong in other tools: if the .docx references fonts Word has but LibreOffice doesn't, you get visible substitution. We ship with the full Microsoft Core Fonts and the most common open-source equivalents, which covers 95% of real-world documents.
For small files (under 5MB, a few pages) this is free up to 3 per day. Larger files cost 2 coins each. Same quality either way.
How it works
- 1Upload your .docx or .doc at /word-to-pdf.
- 2Optionally add a password to the output PDF.
- 3Convert — typically under 10 seconds.
- 4Download the PDF. No watermark.
Frequently asked
Does my formatting stay exactly the same?+
For vanilla Word documents, yes. For documents heavy in Word-specific features (SmartArt, revision marks, linked spreadsheets), small differences may appear — LibreOffice's handling is close but not pixel-identical to Word's.
Can I convert many files at once?+
Not in batch yet (coming in Phase 7 with the public API). For now, drop them in one at a time or zip them up and use the upcoming bulk endpoint.
Password-protect the output?+
Yes — toggle 'Add password' and set a password. Uses AES-256. Costs nothing extra over the 2-coin conversion price.
What about .pages or .odt?+
LibreOffice handles .odt natively, so the tool accepts it. Apple .pages files need to be exported to .docx from Pages first — Apple's format isn't openly documented.
Old .doc files?+
Yes, .doc (97-2003 binary format) is supported. Quality is identical to .docx conversion.
